New Top Padre in Miami

Wenski takes over as Archbishop

The new face of the Catholic Church in Miami will officially take over Tuesday as Bishop Thomas Wenski becomes the city's fourth archbishop in an afternoon ceremony.

Wenski, 59, will formally take over during an installation mass at the Cathedral of St. Mary at 2 p.m.

A South Florida native, Wenski comes to Miami after serving as Bishop of Orlando since 2004.

Wenski was appointed to the position by Pope Benedict XVI on April 20 to replace Archbishop John Favalora. Favalora, 74, has served in the position since 1994.

Wenski will be the first home-grown Archbishop to lead the 1.3 million Catholics in Broward, Dade and Monroe counties.

In addition to English, Wenski speaks Spanish and Creole and has been recognized for his advocacy for immigrants.
