Put away your pumpkins, sex offenders, Florida says no trick-or-treating for you.
In the hopes of curbing child predators this Halloween, the state's Department of Corrections is sending registered sex offenders written notices that the Oct. 31 celebration is off for them.
That means no decorations, no outside lights on and certainly no candy and costumes.
"Most sex offenders are opportunists," Donald Monroe, with Palm Beach County's DOC, told the Sun-Sentinel. "It only takes a second to molest these kids."
The offenders aren't allowed to answer the door if trick-or-treaters come a knockin', and if they violate the decoration orders, they could be busted for violating probation.
As an extra safety, DOC officers will be monitoring some offenders' homes, and they've urged parents to visit their Website to learn where the sex offenders in their area live.
There are about 800 registered sex offenders in Palm Beach and Broward Counties, and over 1,900 in Miami-Dade.
Though there haven't been any reports in Florida of sex offenders harming kids on Halloween, the state just wants parents to be prepared and kids to be safe.
"It's going to be probably uneventful," Monroe said. "Hopefully nothing will happen out there."
