A South Florida nonprofit teamed up with some local elected officials to distribute food to residents in Opa-locka Friday.
Farm Share, the City of Opa-locka, Sen. Oscar Braynon and Rep. Cynthia Stafford took part in the food distribution at Opa-locka's historic city hall.
"We are really low income people, I’m really 66, the provision I get from social security, it’s not enough to make ends meet," said Bernice McNair.
McNair said she doesn’t have much but isn't too proud to talk about it. On top of that she’s raising a son.
"I have an adopted son that has been given to me by the state because of relative problems," she said.
Despite those hardships, she keeps a positive attitude. On Friday, it was especially positive, as she was the first in line for the food giveaway.
"We are really early birds so we came here around 8," she said.
Fresh whole turkeys, frozen potato wedges and apple juices were just a few of the many items being given away. City officials said there was enough food for 600 homes, so no one was going away empty handed.
"People have to choose sometimes between food and medicine, so food is needy with kids out of school, in the summer you gotta help all you can," Opa-locka Vice Mayor Joseph Kelly said.
“I’m so happy, like I said when I talked to you, it’s like Christmas time,” McNair said.
