South Florida airports were continuing to experience delays and cancellations Wednesday thanks to nasty weather in the Northeast.

As of 8:15 a.m., Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was experiencing 44 flight delays and 30 flight cancellations, Broward County Aviation Department spokesman Gregory Meyer said.

Cities affected by the delays and cancellations include Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Providence, Washington D.C., White Plains, San Jose, Santo Domingo and Port-au-Prince.

Dozens of flights at Miami International Airport were also either canceled or delayed early Wednesday.

Heavy snowfall blanketed the Northeast Tuesday followed by another blast of arctic chill like that wrought by the polar vortex in early January. Several flights were delayed and canceled in South Florida as a result Tuesday.

In New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C -- where the weather had caused havoc on the Tuesday evening commute -- wind chills had plummeted well below zero Wednesday.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled at New York's major airports. Chicago snowfall has totaled 38.9 inches, surpassing snowfall totals for the entire winter season last year.

The federal government also effectively shut down Tuesday, as the storm dumped snow across the nation's capital and snarled traffic.

Travels are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
