Congresswoman: Coast Guard “Won't Save Your Sorry Butts”

Politicians get out the word on hurricane preparedness

If you plan on waiting until the last minute to get ready for a hurricane, Miami Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has a few words for you.

Get off your lazy butt or get blown away!

"Those good looking well prepared boys in the baby blue are not going to save your sorry butt if you don't get prepared now," Ros-Lehtinen said today, the opening day of hurricane season.

Local, state, and national politicos were out in force urging South Floridians to prepare for what some prognosticators fear will be the most active storm season on record.

For the last couple of hurricane seasons the officials in charge of area's emergency operation centers have stressed individual and family preparedness.  The minimum goal is to be ready with at least thee days worth of supplies to get you through if relief crews can't get to you.

Disaster after disaster has proved that whether it is Haiti or Louisiana it takes government and private relief agencies three days to mobilize.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez experienced first-hand after Hurricane Wilma the slow trickle of government aid and told a group Tuesday about his frustration with the long lines he saw of Miami-Dade citizens lined up for water.

"Go home and turn on the tap," Alvarez shouted into a cluster of radio and TV microphones.

Ahh, the sweet sounds of hurricane season are here. Stock up.

For once we can believe our politicians.
