Two Dead After Murder, Suicide in NE Miami-Dade Complex

An early morning shooting inside a Northeast Miami Dade apartment complex left two people dead in what police are calling a murder/suicide.

Officers responded to the scene near Miami Gardens Drive and NE 16th Avenue just after 8 a.m. A female victim, later identified as 61-year-old Yasmina Jamal, was shot and taken to Aventura Hospital, where she later died.

The man who shot her - identified by family members as 54-year-old Manuel Navarro - was pronounced dead at the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot, MDPD confirmed.

Police say a confrontation broke out between the two inside the Sky Lake Apartments, saying Navarro struck the victim before following her inside of her apartment, where he opened fire. Jamal's two brothers inside the apartment were not hurt.

"I heard the shooting like four times, I thought it was something else....never thought it was actually shootings," said neighbor Estefania Ramos.

Navarro later went into his apartment, where he shot himself.

Navarro's brother said that he suffered from mental illness and that police had been called to the complex before - something neighbors confirmed, saying Manuel had threatened to kill them at times.

"He told my sister that he was going to shoot his neighbor and my sister said 'no no no' and she heard a shot," Miguel Navarro said.

Police have not released any additional information, including the victim's condition.
