The victim, an elderly man, is believed to have died from smoke inhalation, officials said.

Fire officials said the flames started in a bedroom and the man was found in the kitchen. It's unknown how the fire began.

Relatives identified the man as Dalblemar Domerson, a native of Haiti.

"My heart is hurting," said brother-in-law Benito Jacotin, whose wife is Domerson's sister. "I don't know how I'm going to tell her what happened."

A neighbor, Fontanes Joseph, said he was asleep when the fire began. When he woke up from the noise, he said, "I look around, see lots of smoke."

Another neighbor, Rubiela Parra, said she also saw smoke. She said her husband phoned 911 to report the fire. She called her neighbor a "very good person."
