Officers open fire on carjacking suspects in Lauderdale Lakes

A carjacking suspect is dead and four others were in custody after they were reportedly shot by Broward Sheriff's deputies in Lauderdale Lakes early Monday.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. as deputies responded to a call of a home invasion and were flagged down by Octavious Sapp, who said he had just been carjacked by five men who took off in his car and a white Toyota minivan, detectives said.

The deputies quickly located the Toyota  and the victim's car near the Woodsdale Oaks apartments near Northwest 49th Ave. and 26th St. and a confrontation ensued.

The driver of the van allegedly tried to run over the deputies, who then opened fire.

Brothers Terrence and Ladarrius Boatwright, ages 18 and 17 respectively, were both shot during by deputies. Terrence Boatwright died at the hospital from his injuries.

Obrian Merthyl, 18; Brian Michel, 17; and Steven Francios, 16 were also taken into custody and charged with carjacking and felony murder. 

BSO deputies also recovered a gun at the scene.
