Overtown Families Thankful For Turkey Giveaway

Dozens of South Florida families will have a table full of food this Thanksgiving thanks to the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club. The group Monday handed out bags of food to 75 needy families in Miami’s Overtown.

"We want to give these families not only a wonderful Thanksgiving meal, but we want to give them enough food to carry them for the week," said Nellie Hernandez of the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club.

Joshua Robinson is quick to tell us why he's thankful. “I have my family, friends, education and a roof to sleep under.”

Joshua’s mom is thankful that she has one less thing to worry about this Thanksgiving week.

”I am a mother of six. So it's amazing. It's beautiful, said Nadia Garcon, mother.

The families from five different schools, including Frederick Douglass Elementary and Phillis Wheatley Elementary, grabbed a Publix bag and filled it with essentials like turkey, vegetables, bread and a sweet treat.

Each family is selected based on need. Volunteers with the Kiwanis Club say some students who depend on free or reduced lunch struggle over holiday breaks. This bag of food costs about $50 dollars and goes a long way.

“Gratitude is the resounding response,” said

So much so that one family dropped off a letter thanking the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club.
