Pair Plead Guilty to AK-47 Gun Running Scheme

Two men face 5 years in prison after entering plea in Fort Lauderdale

Two men have pleaded guilty in a Florida federal court to an illegal plot to ship AK-47 assault rifles to Somalia.

Prosecutors in Fort Lauderdale say 79-year-old Joseph O'Toole and 53-year-old Chanoch Miller each face up to five years in prison when they are sentenced in December on arms trafficking conspiracy convictions.

Court documents show that Miller, an Israeli citizen, contacted O'Toole about arranging shipments of 6,000 AK-47s from Bosnia to Somalia. O'Toole is a former Air Force colonel and pilot.

Prosecutors say O'Toole contacted someone working undercover for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The two men were arrested after O'Toole paid the informant $116,000 as partial payment for the first shipment.
