Pair Tried to Cover Up Murder With Fire: BSO

Two men have been arrested after authorities say they killed a man and tried to disguise his murder as a house fire in Fort Lauderdale.

Gerardo Lemus, 23, and Staling Davis Zabala, 28, are both facing murder charges in the death of 38-year-old Eber Dagherto Lucero, Broward Sheriff's Office Officials said.

Lemus and Zabala were being held without bond early Wednesday. It was unknown if they have attorneys.

Detectives say Lemus and Zabala broke into Lucero's home in the 4100 block of Southwest 18th Court on Aug. 2. Once inside, they stabbed Lucero to death with a knife and a machete then started setting fire, officials said.

"Then they tried to cover it up by lighting fires throughout the home. They didn't stop there, they took the victim's money, $10,000 that they divided up amongst themselves," BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said.

Investigators said the incident started with a fight at a night club earlier in the night.

"He was a quiet person, lonely person, would drink by himself," friend Eduardo Argueta said.
