The Florida Panthers fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0 in a rare day game on Sunday at PPG Paints Arena.
The Panthers play most of their games in the evening hours, and maybe that explains their competitiveness in this one. The Penguins jumped out to a lead in the first period, and only added on from there. At times, the Panthers appeared to be unable to keep up with the defending Stanley Cup champions.
Florida had won two of the last three games it played before this one. With slim playoff hopes remaining, the Panthers need every win they can get. After this defeat, Florida has a record of 31-29-11 and only ten games left in the season.
The Panthers had only 21 shots on goal during the entire course of the game, which made things relatively easy for Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. The Penguins meanwhile had 28 shots on goal, and Florida goalie James Reimer only stopped 24 of them.
Three of Pittsburgh's goals came courtesy of Sidney Crosby. The 29-year old completed the hat trick, despite only taking four shots on goal total in the contest.
Both teams did a good job of stopping power plays in the game, with each squad going 0-4 on their advantages.
The Panthers will hope for better results when they host the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
