Panthers Fall in Overtime to Penguins

The Panthers went into overtime for the first time this year and were beaten by the Penguins 3-2

The Florida Panthers picked up a point with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.

Both of Florida's goals came in the third period including a late score with under seven minutes to go in regulation. That goal prevented the Panthers from falling to .500 on the season and also netted the team its seventh point of the season.

After rolling off wins in three of their first four games, Florida has stumbled to two straight losses. Despite the recent struggles, the Panthers still sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. After six games played, Florida trails the first place Montreal Canadiens by seven points.

The Panthers first got on the board courtesy of Quinton Howden at the 11:04 mark of the third period. The goal was the first of the season for Howden and assists were credited to Connor Brickley and Erik Gudbranson.

Florida's aforementioned second score came less than three minutes later when Derek MacKenzie found the net for the first time this year. MacKenzie was assisted on the goal by Howden and Connor Brickley.

Roberto Luongo made 32 saves in over 61 minutes of ice time. Florida's goalie has gotten off to a decent start this year with 159 saves in 169 chances. Luongo is in a bit of a slump compared to his first few contests as he has allowed six goals in the last two games combined.

The Panthers will head to Chicago next for a game against the Blackhawks on Thursday evening.
