The Florida Panthers fell 4-3 after a shootout against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.
With the loss, the Panthers are now 2-0-1 on the season. Florida picked up a point and now has five this year through three games.
The Panthers wasted little time getting on the board and taking the lead. Colton Sceviour's second goal of the season came at the 2:38 mark of the first period. Sceviour was assisted on the goal by Derek MacKenzie and it came while Florida was shorthanded.
After Tampa Bay took the lead, the Panthers would tie the game back up early in the third period. Vincent Trocheck's second goal of the season knotted the game at two. Assisting on the game-tying score were Reilly Smith and Jussi Jokinen.
Michael Matheson added a goal at the 15:52 mark of the third period, and it was the first of his NHL career. Assisting on the memorable goal were Gregg McKegg and Jason Demers. At the time, the score gave Florida the lead. Tampa Bay would force overtime however with a goal of its own towards the end of regulation.
James Reimer made his first start of the season for Florida after Roberto Luongo was in the net for the first two. Reimer had 25 saves in his 28 chances, and allowed the late score. Reimer should continue to see regular playing time all season as Florida looks to give Luongo plenty of rest.
Florida's season continues on Thursday with a home game against the Washington Capitals at 7:30 p.m.
