Colton Sceviour's hat trick helped the Panthers beat the Red Wings 5-2 on Sunday

Colton Sceviour's hat trick helped the Florida Panthers beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 on Sunday at Joe Louis Arena.

The hat trick for Sceviour was the first of his career and it was also Florida's first of the season. The forward also had an assist in the game to give him four points total. His old career high for points in a game was two.

Florida had gone winless its first road games and had lost three games in a row overall. With the poor play away from home, the Panthers find themselves with only a 4-4-1 record on the season even with this win. Florida has nine points after an exceptionally hot start to the season.

The Panthers wasted little time building their lead as they tallied three goals in the first period alone. Florida scored in bunches with the other two goals for the team coming in the second period.

Sceviour got Florida on the board first with his goal at the 6:09 mark of the first period. The power play goal was Sceviour's third goal of the season and it came with assists from Vincent Trocheck and Jason Demers.

It was 23 seconds later that Sceviour found the back of the net once again with his second goal of the day. This score had assists on it from Reilly Smith and Keith Yandle.

As the first period came to a close, Florida's leading scorer Jonathan Marchessault added his sixth goal of the season. Kyle Rau and Denis Malgin had assists on Marchessault's score that put Florida up 3-0.

After Detroit scored a goal, Vincent Trocheck put Florida back up by three with his fourth goal of the season. Trocheck's goal had assists on it from Sceviour and Alex Petrovic.

Sceviour finished his exceptional day with a third goal at the 16:25 mark of the second period. Helping Sceviour complete his hat trick was Demers once again.

The Panthers will return home on Tuesday when they host the Boston Bruins at 7:30 p.m.
