Pastor, Teacher Bring Christmas Cheer to Orphaned Girl

An orphaned little girl in Miami Gardens got a surprise visit from Santa's helpers on Christmas Eve.

Atavia Jones was murdered just before Thanksgiving, leaving behind her daughter, 8-year-old Clinique Mobley.

Wanda Jones, Atavia's mother and Clinique's grandmother, said the last text message she received from Atavia was a Christmas list for her daughter.

"She was going to make sure she got everything on that list," Jones said.

Clinique's home room teacher Lakeisha Readon decided she wanted to help out the family.

"God laid it on my heart to do something, my husband and I," Readon said.

So she and her spouse, Pastor Eric Readon, took it upon themselves to bring some Christmas cheer to a family that is still struggling with grief.

"I was overwhelmed because just to know there are some good people, in spite of bad people out there, there's always good people out there," Jones said.

This isn't the first time the family has suffered from violence. Jones said another one of her daughters was murdered two years ago, when Shuneequa Jones was stabbed to death in front of her house.

Readon said that in spite of the family's suffering, Clinique is staying strong.

"She's a very strong little girl," Readon said. "You can hear it in the conversation, she knows her momma's gone but there are still people here that are going to help her."

And Clinique was grateful for the help offered to her family.

"It was really nice," she said. "Thank you for all these gifts, and wish you a Merry Christmas too!"
