Pedestrian in Critical Condition After Being Hit by SUV in Pembroke Pines

A black Nissan Pathfinder driven by 51-year-old Derek Ragoonath was heading westbound on Pines when he struck 26-year-old Exavier Lucumi as he attempted to cross the road.

A pedestrian is in critical condition after being hit by an SUV early Sunday morning, police said.

Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene on the 7000 block of Pines Boulevard around 5:30 a.m.

A black Nissan Pathfinder driven by 51-year-old Derek Ragoonath was heading westbound on Pines when he struck 26-year-old Exavier Lucumi as he attempted to cross the road.

Lucumi was not in a crosswalk when he was hit, police said.

Officers made contact with Ragoonath a short distance from the scene of the accident.

Lucumi sustained serious injuries and was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital. He is listed in critical condition.

Police say no charges have been filed at this time. The accident is still under investigation.
