Pembroke Pines Condo President Steals Association's Money to Gamble

Nancy Marquez, 58, was charged with grand theft for embezzling money from the condo association she headed.

The president of a Pembroke Pines condo association was arrested for taking the group's money and using it to gamble.

Nancy Marquez, 58, was charged with grand theft for embezzling $148,012 from the French Villas Condominium Association at 601 French Drive in Pembroke Pines, according to a Broward County Sheriff's Office complaint affidavit.

She used this money to pay personal bills and gamble at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, the report said.

Marquez worked as the association's president and secretary from 2008 to 2011, during which time she had full control of the association's finances, including accounting records, bank statements debit cards and monthly budget.

The report says she would transfer money from the association's checking and savings accounts to her personal checking account, and would hide the records from the association's other board members.

The theft left the association unable to pay its bills, including utilities, which were shut off at one point.

Marquez was released Tuesday on $7,500 bond.
