Person From Broward County Died From Flu, Hospital Says

A person from Broward County has died from the flu, a Broward hospital confirmed to NBC 6.

Not many details about the case were immediately available, except that the person died this week.

Candy Sims of the Florida Department of Health in Broward County said that the Florida Department of Health is not required to report flu-related deaths unless they involve a pediatric patient.

There are no reports of pediatric flu deaths in Broward County at this time, she said Wednesday.

In central Florida, health officials said earlier this week that a woman in her mid-30s who had recently given birth had died from the flu. The woman gave birth in early December, officials said Monday.

She was the second flu fatality of the season in Brevard County.

Common flu symptoms include a fever (which is usually a high one), headaches, coughing, a sore throat, muscle aches, and extreme tiredness.

Sims advised residents that the best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu shot.

There are also a number of other very effective steps people can take to prevent the spread of influenza, she said in an email. They include washing your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer; avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth; and not sharing personal items such as eating utensils, drinking glasses and towels.

In addition, it's best if people stay home when they are sick, keep sick children at home, and check with a health care provider when needed, Sims said.

Residents should also avoid close contact with people who are sick, and avoid crowds and places where people gather and are likely to be sneezing and coughing, she added.
