The husband of a woman who was gunned down near a northwest Miami Dade preschool earlier this week has been arrested and is facing charges in connection to her death, police said Friday.
Michelle Wilcox, a mother and teacher, died Wednesday apparently while trying to retrieve her mail. An argument inside a residence escalated and moved outside, where the 33-year-old was shot as she tried to run away, police said.
Antonio Maurice Wilcox was detained and questioned Friday, during which police said he confessed to shooting his wife of 12 years. He has been charged with second degree murder.
The shooting, which police charactarized as a deadly domestic dispute, happened Wednesday afternoon just outside a daycare on northwest 119th Street and 22nd Court. The shooting was captured on camera by the preschool's security system.
Wilcox was an elementary teacher at Center of Life Academy in downtown Miami, inside the Miami Rescue Mission. She also helped students get ready to go to college.
"It feels so surreal and my heart feels tarnished right now because she was such a good person," student Shir'niyaa Charles said. "It's just not fair. One minute you're here and the next minute you're gone."
Antonio Wilcox, who was also the father of the victim's child, was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center Friday, according to police.
