A man who was rescued after the pickup truck he was driving rolled over into a canal during a crash in Pembroke Pines Wednesday has died, officials said.
The crash happened in the area of Taft Street and 91st Avenue, Pembroke Pines Police said. Footage showed the truck upside down in the canal with divers nearby.
Witnesses said a group of good Samaritans jumped into the water to try to free the trapped driver.
"He was not responsive at all. He was pale, the only color you saw was in his ankles, were really red," witness Agnerys Miguel said. "He was really swollen and there was no response."
Police said the driver was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
The driver was later identified as Michael Almeida.
“I just didn’t think — I just jumped in," a good Samaritan who wished to remain anonymous said. “We were trying to do our best to get him out. Police came, cut the seatbelt out and then we dragged him up onto the bank and they started performing CPR.”
Police said witnesses reported the driver weaving on the road before he rear-ended another car then crashed into the canal. The cause of the crash was under investigation.
Roadways in the area were being temporarily closed, officials said.
