Woman Struck, Killed By SUV Near Bus Stop in Lauderdale Lakes: BSO

A woman was struck and killed by an SUV while standing near a bus stop in Lauderdale Lakes, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

It happened around 1:15 p.m. Thursday near State Road 7 and Oakland Park Boulevard.

BSO said Jerdy Germain, 39, was driving a Nissan Pathfinder when she swerved and struck Nelita Al-Barker, 45, standing near the bus stop. Authorities said Ali-Barker was pinned to one of the columns and died on the scene.

Germain was transported to Plantation General Hospital as a precaution.

Authorities said it's unclear whether Ali-Barker was waiting for the bus, or just standing nearby.

BSO closed westbound Oakland Park Boulevard for several hours while crews investigated, but the area has since reopened to traffic.

There's no word on what caused Germain to swerve.

BSO said speed and impairment are not believed to be contributing factors to the incident, and criminal charges are not pending.

The investigation continues.
