Police Chase Ends In Light Pole Crash

Four arrested after pursuit goes from Kendall to Miramar

Police arrested four men after a high speed chase that started near Miami-Dade College and ended in Miramar on SW 104th Street around 1:36 Wednesday morning.

Officers with Miramar and Miami-Dade Police chased a black Toyota Sienna minivan north to I-75 after it took from Southwest 104th Street around 1:30 a.m.

Police learned the vehicle was reported stolen in Broward. The driver sped east on Monarch Lakes Boulevard and slammed into a cement light pole, snapping it in half.

Miramar police took a fifth man into custody, but released him. Rescue crews did not take anyone to the hospital, but treated some of the suspects for minor injuries.

Miami-Dade Public Information Officer Javier Baez said the pursuit started after police spotted a man going into a car, and approached him. The man went inside the Toyota Sienna, while others waited inside.

The driver started backing up, Baez said, then drove "aggressively" toward an officer. The officer dodged the vehicle, and police gave chase. They ended up on Monarch Boulevard just after 2 a.m.

Police say they charged the driver, 33-year-old Dwayne Simmons, with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, grand theft auto and aggravated fleeing and eluding, among other charges.

They also charged 29-year-old Carlos Lopez, 27-year-old Michael Robert Lopez, and 29-year-old Vladimir Guerra with grand theft auto, and resisting arrest without violence.

Police say they Tazered driver Dwayne Simmons and Michael Lopez after the crash.
