3-Year-Old Girl Shot in Liberty City

Police and SWAT team members are investigating after a three-year-old girl was shot in Liberty City Sunday afternoon.

The shooting happened in an apartment building in the area of Northwest 62nd Street and 12th Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Miami Police and a SWAT team were at the scene, redirecting traffic and pedestrians in the area. Police were still searching for at least one shooter.

According to Miami Fire Rescue, a three-year-old girl was picked up by responders at a nearby bus stop and transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

The girl was identified as Ayanna Daniels by her parents. They said she had successful surgery to remove a bullet from her leg.

Police said the shooting started as a dispute between neighbors when bullets started flying. Family members said Daniels was outside playing with her brother and friends when she was hit.

"She a baby, she's gonna be traumatized, she ain't never gonna get over this," mother Kiera Daniels said. "She's gonna think about this for the rest of her life, my baby didn't deserve this."

Her father, Alquidivan Daniels, said he fired a weapon at the suspects. No one else was injured in the gunfire.

Other neighbors said the shootings are not new and mentioned three in the area over the weekend.

"It is sad because as parents you don't want that. You don't want to see anything happen to your kid," said neighbor Juanita Augustine. "We are supposed to protect our kids. It is sad, but we need help. This community needs help."
