One burglary suspect was shot, another is on the run and an innocent motorist was critically injured in a chaotic series of events in Northwest Miami-Dade Tuesday morning.
The incident began around 5 a.m. when an officer responding to a call of a burglary at a residence in the area of 35th Avenue and Northwest 79th Street spotted a grey Isuzu SUV leaving the area that matched a description of the suspects' car, Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Rosanna Cordero-Stutz said.
Cordero-Stutz said the officer stopped, got out of her vehicle and ordered the two men in the SUV to get out at gunpoint.
The car's passenger fled on foot, while the driver of the SUV revved his engine and struck the officer's vehicle, Cordero-Stutz said.
"She ordered the occupants to step out of the vehicle at gunpoint," Cordero-Stutz said. "The driver then revved the engine and in fact struck the officer's vehicle with his own as he fled the area."
The officer, a 6-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police department, opened fire on the suspect, who was identifited as Richard Martinez, 44, as he took off on Northwest 79th Street.
By the time the officer caught up to the suspect at 32nd Avenue, she found he had crashed into a white Kia sedan.
The suspect, who tried to flee on foot, was found with a gunshot wound to his stomach, Cordero-Stutz said. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition and faces charges including attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and wreckless driving.
The driver of the Kia was also taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The officer is in good condition, Cordero-Stutz said.
Cordero-Stutz said police are still looking for the second suspect, described as a white male. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
