Teen Suspect Killed in Police-Involved Shooting in Southwest Miami-Dade

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by a police officer in Southwest Miami-Dade Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The incident happened on Southwest 65th Street and Kendale Lakes Drive. Cellphone video by an NBC 6 viewer showed the deadly encounter.

A uniformed Miami-Dade officer was part of a burglary detail when he approached the teen at a nearby park, according to a press release. That's when the suspect ran away and the officer chased after him on foot into the Spanish Villas Community.

At one point, the officer tried to tase the suspect, but the 16-year-old pulled out a knife and lunged at the officer, police said. That's when the officer discharged his gun and shot the suspect.

The teen's identity was not revealed.

The officer, who was not identified, was not hurt in the incident. Police said he had been with the department for a little more than one year. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
