1 Dead in Police-Involved Shooting in Sunrise

A 38-year-old man who was allegedly armed with a knife is dead after Sunrise Police shot him Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened near a Walgreen's in the 2300 block of N. University Drive, officials said. The incident began when a call about a man with a knife acting irrationally. The caller said the man suffered from mental illness, may not be taking his medication and could become violent.

Sunrise Police officers caught up with the man at a Mobil gas station on the corner of N. University Drive and Sunset Strip. Police said the man still had the knife when the first approached him.

According to Sunrise Police, the man ran north to a Walgreen’s parking lot and still had the knife on him. Police said they initially tried Tasers and then a K-9 to subdue the man. One officer finally fired at the man with his gun.

“He was laying on the ground and they were putting handcuffs on him and he was already shot and he looked lifeless,” said witness Cherie Ince.

The man was taken to Broward Health, but was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police said the officer who fired is on administrative leave which is departmental policy.
