Cops search for suspect to tried to flee police in canal

Police are looking for a burglary suspect who jumped into a canal to flee officers in Sunrise Thursday morning.

The incident began around 3 a.m. when an officer spotted a man trying to cut the storm shutters of a closed farm store at the corner of Sunset Strip and Northwest 12th Court, Sunrise Police spokeswoman Cindi McCue said.

When the suspect saw the officer, he jumped into a canal that was about 30 feet from the store, McCue said.

Dive teams, K-9 units and a police helicopter searched the area but were unable to locate the man, McCue said. The search was called off after about five hours.

"We've used K-9, helicopters and dive teams twice and at this point have exhausted the leads to locate him in the area," McCue said. "We believe he either may have left the area or is just not able to be located at this time."

No other details were immediately known.
