Police Officer Victim of Armed Robbery at Plantation Hotel

Police are investigating after a Hollywood Police officer was the victim of an armed robbery at a Plantation hotel.

The robbery happened Thursday morning at the Residence Inn at 130 North University Drive when the officer, who was a guest at the hotel, heard a knock on his door and opened it thinking it was his wife, police said.

The victim was met by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun. A struggle ensued and the officer was struck on the head with the butt of the pistol.

The officer was ordered to lay on the ground and was bound with bedsheets while a pillowcase was placed over his head. Cash and other property was taken from the room.

Investigators wouldn't say if the officer's gun was taken. The officer is in the process of retiring and had sold his home and was staying at the hotel with his wife.

Police said the suspects first tried to get to the victim by convincing hotel staff to give them the key to the room.

"They went into the lobby of the hotel and they were talking to employees trying to gain access to this particular building," Plantation Police Det. Philip Toman said. "Staff never let them in, at some point in time they left the lobby. We can only assume that somebody was exiting the building and they made their way inside."

Police said the suspects were two black males, and there may be a third suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
