Boyfriend Turns Self in After Killing Ex's 9-Year-Old

Police: Girl shot and killed in minivan in Davie, mother's ex a person of interest

The man police suspect of killing a 9-year-old girl during an argument with his ex-girlfriend has turned himself in to Tampa police, authorities said.

Davie Police had been searching for Jody Gordon since Sunday morning, when he allegedly opened fire on a minivan full of people outside an apartment building on the 7300 block of Stirling Road.

Gordon, 41, had been arguing with a woman sitting in the van when he pulled out a gun. One of the at least a half dozen bullets fired hit Mayia Nelson, the woman's young daughter.

"Several shots struck the van, one of which struck a 9-year-old female passenger in the van in the head," said Sgt. Greg Gasse, with the Davie Police Department.

In a frantic attempt to flee, the woman drove to a nearby Publix, where she sought help for her daughter.

The girl was rushed to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where she later died.

Police said the woman filed a police report Saturday night after a domestic dispute with Gordon.

Gordon will be charged with first-degree murder and is expected to be transported back to South Florida to face formal charges.
