Police deputies shot a distraught armed man threatening suicide while in a parked car in Pompano Beach last night.

Shortly before 11 p.m., police received a call from relatives that 34-year-old Daniel Allen Cook had traveled from Arkansas to Fort Lauderdale to "kill himself or be killed," according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Cook's car was spotted a short time later in a public parking lot on A1A near Atlantic Blvd, and deputies quickly responded and found Cook sitting in his car.

Witnesses said Cook, parked in a white SUV, appeared to be drinking as he talked with police. Deputies tried to calm him down for nearly 30 minutes, according to the police report.

According to police, Cook began making strange movements, then pointed the gun at deputies. Officers fired three shots, striking Cook once in the stomach.

Cook was taken to North Broward Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The deputies involved were placed on administrative leave.
