Police say a suspect who struck an officer with his vehicle in Hialeah was shot by police Monday morning.

The incident began when the officer attempted to stop what was believed to be a stolen vehicle in the area of Okeechobee Road and Lejeune Road, police said.

During the stop, the driver of the car struck the officer and sped off as he was wounded by police gunfire, police said. Officers caught up to him in the area of Southeast 8th Street and 8th Court, where they were able to take him into custody.

A woman who was also in his car wasn't shot but was detained, police said.

The officer who was struck by the car was taken to a nearby hospital where his condition was unknown. The suspect, who wasn't identified, was also hospitalized in unknown condition.

Hialeah Police spokesman Eddie Rodriguez called the vehicle a "2,000-pound deadly weapon."

The incident is still being investigated.
