Polo Mogul Testifies In His Manslaughter Trial

John Goodman made headlines last year when he adopted his girlfriend as his daughter - allegedly to save his fortune in a civil law suit.

The South Florida multi-millionaire accused of DUI manslaughter took the stand in his own defense Wednesday.

John Goodman is the founder of the International Polo Club in Palm Beach. He made headlines last year when he adopted his girlfriend as his daughter - allegedly to save his fortune in a civil law suit.

Goodman is charged in the February 2010 crash that killed 23-year-old Scott Wilson.

On the stand, the Goodman admitted to drinking before the crash, but he said he wasn't drunk.

"Other than the three drinks on your tab, did you have any other drinks?" Roy Black, his defense attorney asked.

"I did not," Goodman answered.

Prosecutors said Goodman ran a stop sign, hitting Wilson's car, flipping it into a canal where Wilson drowned. Goodman said he hit the brakes.

"The car did not seem to be stopping as easily as I was used to," Goodman said about his Bentley.

An expert engineer testified it could have been a malfunction, but the prosecution didn't budge saying, "It's huge. The motor is huge. Bentley is going to let it malfunction before a light comes on?"

After the crash, Goodman said he woke up with a concussion. While he was looking for a phone to call for help, he found alcohol at a polo player's home. It's his explanation on why his blood alcohol content was more than two times over the legal limit.

"I saw liquor on the counter and I grabbed a bottle and drank it thinking it would help with my pain," he said. "I was in excruciating pain."

Prosecutors argue Goodman was drunk before the crash.

Goodman also testified it took him so long to call for help because first he couldn't find a phone. When he did find a phone, he said he called his girlfriend first because it was the only number he could remember. Then, he said called 911, but doesn't remember who's idea it was to call police - his or the woman who let him borrow her phone.

Closing arguments and jury deliberations are expected to begin Thursday.
