Pompano Beach Apartment Burglaries Possibly Linked to Key Fob Issue

Multiple residents at the Avana Bayview Luxury Apartments in Pompano Beach say they’ve been having trouble sleeping after at least nine reported break-ins, burglaries and thefts.

“I got an alert on my phone that there has been motion detected inside my apartment,” said Simoney Coaxum.

Coaxum lives alone at the complex on Federal Highway in Pompano Beach but on Nov. 4, she got an unwanted visitor. Her own surveillance cameras captured a stranger entering her apartment.

With a phone and water bottle in her hand, the intruder starts rifling through a box and at one point it appears she was going to go further into the apartment, but she noticed the cameras and bolted out the door. She did not get away with anything.

“This is very scary because I don’t know how she got in and I’m 10,000 percent sure that I locked my door when I left,” said Coaxum.

Another resident at the complex dug up reports from the Broward Sheriff’s Office ranging from the beginning of October to Monday. The incident reports include theft of car parts in the parking garage, burglaries and apartments break-ins.

Another resident who didn’t want to be identified said the mufflers on his motorcycles were stolen in the building’s parking garage.

“The anxiety of not knowing if my motorcycle is gonna be there. Are my possessions gonna be there when I come home, is very nerve-wracking,” the concerned resident said.

Several residents say problems with the building’s electronic key card system are partly to blame.

NBC 6 obtained a letter notifying residents of attempts at updating fob key devices but residents say nothing official has been done to update security as of yet.

“I’ve been told that the key system has been broken for about nine months now. Anyone can go in and out past residence that haven’t returned her fob still have access to the building,” said Coaxum.

“The security, in my opinion, is probably not the best. Someone can just walk behind someone else. Someone can just drive behind someone else as they’re entering the garage,” said another concerned resident.

Residents tell us they have been unsuccessful getting a hold of management. NBC 6 has reached out – leaving voicemails – to Greystar Management, which runs the Avana Bayview property. This article will be updated when a response is delivered.
