Pompano Beach Man Fights, Defeats Craigslist Robber: BSO

Instead of paying, the buyer "pulled out a gun," authorities said

A Pompano Beach man foiled a would-be Craigslist robber when he grabbed his gun, fought him and restrained him, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Serkan Demir, 25, sought to sell his spare iPhone, so he arranged to meet prospective buyer Brandon Hollis, 18, in the parking lot of his apartment complex in Pompano Beach Sunday night, the BSO said.

But when it was time for Hollis to pay, “he pulled out a gun instead of cash,” the BSO said.

Appearing to chamber a round, Hollis demanded the iPhone, but Demir took his gun and began fighting with him, authorities said. Demir and two other men restrained Hollis, of 3106 NW 3rd Ave. in Pompano Beach, until a sheriff’s deputy arrived to arrest him, the BSO added.

Hollis was charged with armed robbery, the BSO said. No bond or court information is yet available for his case.

The incident is the latest in a series of reported Craigslist crimes in South Florida in recent weeks.

Update: The BSO said that Demir sat on Hollis, but Demir told NBC Miami later on Monday that he did not sit on the suspect, but just held him down.
