A Pompano Beach man was quickly apprehended Tuesday blocks from his home where he shot and then fatally stabbed his younger brother with a kitchen knife, authorities said.
Dieuseul Cemerant, 23, confronted and shot Saint-Ange Cemerant, 21, in their home at 305 Southeast 9th Ave., the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
Dieuseul Cemerant (pictured below) was being held without bond early Wednesday, jail records showed. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
Just before 4 p.m., the agency received a call about a domestic incident at their apartment. Deputies discovered Saint-Ange Cemerant dead in the apartment. A few minutes later deputies arrested his brother, who deputies said confessed to the killing.
According to family friends, Saint-Ange Cemerant was at the apartment with his girlfriend when Dieuseul walked in. The brothers share the apartment with their mother. An argument about the use of a car became heated and that’s when deputies said things got out of hand.
"At that moment the suspect shot his brother,” said BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter. “The two struggled for the weapon and then at that moment, the suspect went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and stabbed his brother."
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene seven minutes after the call came in, the BSO said.
Saint-Ange Cemerant’s girlfriend witnessed the whole traumatic event unfold, according to family. The two had been dating for five years and those close to the couple said the brothers were constantly feuding.
"The two brothers, they never got along. They really never did get along," aunt Jocelyne Colas said. "They were always like 'I’m better.’ Like a jealousy competition."
It wasn't a competition, but an argument about a car and the moments after – ending with a mother and father losing two sons. One in death – the other to the authorities. Dieuseul Cemerant was taken to the public safety building for questioning.
