Poop Warning Lifted for Biscayne Bay Swimmers

Millions of gallons of raw sewage was released into the Intracoastal over the weekend

It's now safe to go back in the water, as if anyone ever stopped.

The swimming advisory for Haulover Beach and other areas around Biscayne Bay has been lifted after a sewage line leak that sent millions of gallons of poop into the water was stopped.

But not every spot is clear of the potential filth and portions located on the northern part of the bay are still closed to the public. But that hasn't stopped people from venturing into the water.

A 72-inch pipeline burst near the corner of 18th Ave and Northwest 157th Street Friday night, causing 20 million gallons of the stinky stuff to seep into the Intracoastal Waterway.

The Haulover Beach advisory was officially lifted at 4:30 p.m. Monday, but Miami-Dade crews had stopped the leak on Saturday morning.

Still, the potentially hazardous material in the water could have posed a serious health risk to anyone who might ingest it while swimming.

But that didn't stop hundreds of families from escaping the summer heat and jumping into the cool, poop-infested waters.

No one has showed up at area hospitals with signs of illness from the spill, but we still suggest showering thoroughly before coming near any human being if you've been swimming in the bay over the weekend.
