Confirmed Tornado Sweeps Through Delray Beach, Leaves Trail of Damage

Officials say a tornado touched down in Delray Beach Thursday, a day after a confirmed tornado landed in Coconut Creek.

Thursday's tornado was an EF-0 tornado with wind speeds of 65-85 mph, the National Weather Service confirmed.

Strong winds knocked down trees and caused some roof damage as the area was placed under a tornado warning earlier in the day.

Staff members at St. Mary's Anglican Church believe the tornado hit right in the middle of their courtyard.

"I heard this huge noise. I could feel the rain just beating," said JP Listick, church staff member. "I did not expect a tornado here."

"Debris all over and of course, the furniture in here was broken. Fence torn down. We have damage to the roof," explained Gerry Lewandowski, church treasurer.

Trees also broke in half, spreading debris around the parking lot. Utility crews worked to restore power and remained on the scene for several hours fixing downed power lines.

Derric Phillips, a Delray Beach resident, was home when the tornado hit, "I heard a roaring sound, so I jumped up panicking and looked out the window at the dark skies and heavy rain. I saw the tree snap. I ran and hid in the closet."

Meanwhile, severe weather continued to affect the rest of South Florida Thursday, with heavy wind and rain reported in parts of Miami-Dade and Broward.

Some street flooding was reported in Miami Beach and downtown Miami.

Florida Power and Light reported outages to 577 customers in Miami-Dade, with another 257 customers affected in Broward.

"Very busy. We're gonna have to work even Sunday to keep up with the ticket load," said Jaime Carvajal, a utility worker.

On Wednesday, a confirmed tornado touched down in the area of Coconut Creek. The tornado flipped cars, caused damage to homes and businesses and caused at least one injury.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
