Armed Robbers Snatched Master Keys From Postal Worker in Fort Lauderdale

The letter carrier was taking a break when two robbers accosted her

A set of master keys for a Fort Lauderdale apartment was stolen when a postal worker was robbed at gunpoint while delivering mail Friday afternoon.

The letter carrier was not hurt, officials said, but she was a bit shaken after the thieves snatched the keys from her hands. It's possible the keys can access other apartment building mailboxes in the area, inspectors said.

The worker had just finished dropping of mail and was taking a break in the postal van when she was targeted by two armed men on the 2300 block of Northwest 7th Court, inspectors said.

"She's been on this route alone for about 15 years so she's very comfortable here so it's not uncommon for a letter carrier to take their break right in front of where they just finished delivering because they're just comfortable. These things unfortunately are crimes of opportunity," said postal inspector Ivan Ramirez.

The robbers had a cover over their faces, so the postal worker was not able to give a good description of the suspects.  A reward up to $25,000 is being offered to anyone with information leading to an arrest of conviction in the case.
