Pres. Trump Speaks With Former Colombian Leaders During Mar-a-Lago Meetings: Report

A report from one South Florida newspaper revealed President Donald Trump met with two former leaders of Colombia – both opposed to a peace agreement between the current government and rebel leaders.

The Miami Herald reported that Trump met with Alvaro Uribe and Andres Pastrana last weekend during the most recent visit to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach County. Colombian news media says the meeting was set up by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, according to the Herald.

Rubio has also been a critic of the agreement between current President Juan Manuel Santos – who will meet with Pres. Trump in May – and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

The meeting was never made public and the media covering the President’s trip was not notified. The White House later confirmed the meeting took place after initially declining to answer questions – calling it a mere coincidence that Uribe and Pastrana were at the club at the same time Trump was.

After an initial peace deal was voted down last October, Santos negotiated with rebel leaders and submitted a peace deal to the country’s Congress, which approved it one month later.
