Preservation Grant Awarded to Miami Marine Stadium

The Getty Foundation is awarding a grant to the group leading the effort to restore and reopen the Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key.
 
The Friends of Miami Marine Stadium will used the $180,000 in funding announced Thursday to hire specialists to evaluate and recommend ways to restore the facility's concrete exterior and unusual structural underpinnings.
 
The Miami Herald reports the foundation also awarded funding to the Sydney Opera House, Fran Lloyd Wright's Prairie-style Robie House in Chicago, and an apartment in Paris designed by architect Le Corbusier.
 
Miami Marine Stadium was designed by Cuban American architect Hilario Candela. It was a popular site for powerboat races and concerts but was shut down due to damage from Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
