Prisoner Caught After Escaping Custody in Downtown Miami

A handcuffed prisoner who escaped custody in downtown Miami was caught after a large search Thursday night.

Homeland Security officers were transporting the prisoner from Miami International Airport when he escaped, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said.

Authorities set up a perimeter and later caught the suspect at Bayside. It's unknown why he was in custody to begin with.

β€œThe suspect was in the custody on Homeland Security Investigations when he managed to flee from law enforcement," a spokesman for Homeland Security said in a statement. "He is currently in custody and being processed into the Federal Detention Center in Downtown Miami. We appreciate the assistance received from local law enforcement."

Students at nearby Miami-Dade College said security put them on lockdown and later evacuated them.
