Prisoner Who Escaped BSO in Weston Arrested in Tallahassee

A burglary suspect who escaped custody of the Broward Sheriff's Office in Weston last month was arrested in Tallahassee, authorities said Wednesday.

Damian Alexander Fernandez, 21, was arrested late Tuesday at a friend's house, five days after escaping custody, the BSO said. He now faces charges of battery on a law enforcement officer and escape, in addition to previous charges of car burglary, petit theft, obstruction without violence, grand theft of a firearm and armed car burglary.

Two accomplices who helped him hide, Andrew Gonzalez and Mirko Vall de Ruten, both 25, were also arrested and face charges of accessory after the fact and aiding an escaped prisoner, the BSO said.

Deputies had picked up Fernandez on a burglary warrant on Sept. 25 and he was brought to a district office when he managed to escape while in handcuffs. The escape set off a massive search in Weston with helicopters and K-9 units unable to find Fernandez.

Fernandez was given help by his friends, who provided a handcuff key, let him clean himself up and make phone calls, the BSO said. He somehow made his way to his girlfriend's house in Tallahassee where he was arrested.
