Professor Accused of Traveling to South Florida to Meet Minor for Sex: FBI

Florida authorities have arrested a Michigan professor for allegedly traveling to meet a minor for sex in Broward County.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents, along with the FBI, Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, arrested James Daniel Cavalcoli, 51, last week.

Cavalcoli, a professor at the University of Michigan, was arrested in Weston after traveling from Michigan to meet who he thought was a 14-year-old juvenile for sex, authorities said.

Cavalcoli allegedly made arrangements to meet the child through an undercover FDLE agent, whom he believed to be the child's father.

Investigators said Cavalcoli was in possession of multiple digital devices, including a personal laptop at the time of the arrest. Those items were confiscated as evidence and are undergoing forensic examination.

Cavalcoli was booked into the Broward County Jail pending transport to Federal Court in Fort Lauderdale where he will be charged federally.

Jail records didn't list an attorney.
