Program Helps Homeless South Florida Veteran Find Home

As many are beginning their holiday weekend celebrations one South Florida veteran and father says this Memorial Day will be special because last year he was living out of his car.

For 46-year-old Steven Hill, washing dishes, sweeping floors and picking up toys aren't chores. They're blessings.

"There were many times my faith was questioned. Even now, looking back on it now, I wonder how we made it through," he said.

Hill served six years of active duty in the United States Navy. After wrapping up his service he returned home only to lose his job and be evicted. Hill and his wife were forced to live on the streets while his mother in law cared for their children.

"Probably for me, the hardest thing I've ever experienced," Hill said. "Not having a place to call home, not knowing what's going to happen to you night after night and then having to experience that with your family members."

Hill says hope came from the Carrfour Supportive Housing’s Operation's Sacred Trust or OST program. Now Hill and his family are living at the Dr. Barbara Carey Shuler Manor community in Liberty City.

The nonprofit organization strives to assists veterans facing homelessness and has helped 7,500 veterans over the last three years.

For Hill, this Memorial Day is another reminder to continue serving others.

"A day where we acknowledge those who've sacrificed their lives so that we can continue to be free," he said.
