Jury Views Video of Fatal High School Fight

Defense expected to begin Thursday

A Miami-Dade jury got a glimpse Wednesday of an attack that ended with the stabbing death of a Coral Gables High student at the hands of a classmate.

Andy Rodriguez, 18, is accused of stabbing and killing Juan Carlos Rivera during a fight at school in 2009.

Prosecutors showed surveillance video of part of the fight to jurors, who had spent the past few days listening to witnesses describe what happened.

A courtroom deputy stood in front of the monitor showing the footage, obscuring the view of the media assembled to cover the trial.

Rodriguez, who is charged with second-degree murder, claims he was defending himself during the fight.

Prosecutors also displayed evidence found at the scene of the fight, including a broken tooth from Rivera, which caused the boy's mother to leave the courtroom crying.

On Tuesday, Miami-Dade Detective Juan Segovia testified that Rodriguez was too cool and collected when being questioned by police shortly after the stabbing.

Segovia, who was one of the first cops to talk to Rodriguez after the incident, said Rodriguez seemed unfazed while he sat in the interrogation room just after the fatal stabbing.

"He was very relaxed," he said. "Too relaxed for the situation he was in."

Jurors spent an hour watching the interrogation recording where Rodriguez gave his account of what happened Sept. 14, 2009 in the school courtyard.

On the tape, Rodriguez claimed to be defending himself and told Segovia that he reached around Rivera and stabbed him in the back during the fight.

Segovia took the stand again Wednesday for cross-examination.

Rodriguez's defense attorneys are expected to call witnesses Thursday.
