Puppy Rescued From Fort Lauderdale Fire in Intensive Care

A puppy that was rescued from a house fire in Fort Lauderdale was being treated at a veterinarian's intensive care unit Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to a home in the 1800 block of Southwest 22nd Street around 9 a.m. But before they arrived, neighbors has already rescued the 9-month-old puppy, Sweet Pea, from the home. Sweet Pea's owner, Jason Hall, wasn't injured but his two other dogs died at the scene.

Sweet Pea was taken to Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists with second-degree burns on 20-30 percent of her body. She was also suffering from smoke inhalation. Vets had the puppy in their intensive care unit where she was administered IV fluids and given oxygen and medication.

"We're very thankful for the actions of the good Samaritans and the firefighters, as we were able to give Sweet Pea a good chance at survival," said Dr. Lynel Tocci, a critical care specialist at LVS. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they cope with the loss of their other two other dogs and the devastation of the fire."

LVS has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for Sweet Pea's medical expenses.
