Push for In-State Tuition Break in Trouble

A push to let students pay in-state college tuition rates, even if they are in the country illegally, is in trouble.

A key Republican state senator on Thursday used a procedural move to block the legislation from being heard next week in a Senate committee.

Sen. Joe Negron, R-Stuart and Senate budget chief, said in a statement that in-state tuition discounts should be reserved for legal residents of Florida. Negron pointed out that students here illegally are still allowed to attend college and could attempt to get legal residency.

The only way the bill (SB 1400) can be heard now by the full Senate is by a supermajority vote.

The decision to block the bill comes even though Gov. Rick Scott is now supporting the proposal.
