Rail Project Connecting Miami Beach, Mainland Moves Forward

Officials have agreed on a way to pursue a long-delayed rail connection between Miami and Miami Beach.

The Miami Herald reports a panel of elected officials including Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine agreed on Thursday to a process to complete the Bay Link project.

Miami Beach will work on its portion of the project by preparing an environment analysis while soliciting proposals to construct the connection. Miami Beach has received an unsolicited proposal from French rail company Alstom.

Miami-Dade County and the city of Miami are also preparing their own environmental analysis aligned with federal requirements.

The entire project is expected to cost $532 million. Miami Beach's portion of the price tag is expected to be $148 million.
