A Veterans Day parade in South Florida might be canceled because a Confederate battle flag was flown at the event last fall.

The board of directors of the Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce has voted to recommend that officials disband the Homestead parade, which has been held in the community for more than 40 years. Another board will decide whether to follow that recommendation at a meeting in June.

Mary Finlan, the executive director of the chamber, says board members were concerned military personnel and veterans might be heckled or mistreated at the event because of the flag.

The controversial flag made an appearance at the parade last November when the Sons of Confederate Veterans marched in the event for the first time.
